The Apple iPhone And The Power Of Double Tap

The first thing you will probably have done when you got your Apple iPhone would be to have spent a few days playing about with all the various features and applications so that you get a good idea how everything works. Did you know, however, that as well as all the obvious functions that you see displayed on the touch screen there are also a few hidden ones? Not a lot of people take the time to learn these because the iPhone is so easy to use that they don't think there is anything else to learn about using it.

It can, however, change your experience of the iPhone once you start to learn about the extra hidden features that you weren't aware of before. It might seem like a waste of time learning these features but once you pick them up you'll find them so handy that you'll be glad you spent a little extra time teaching them to yourself.

When you have an iPhone, you probably have noticed that you really never have to double-tap a single item. It seems that everything on this interface reacts with a simple one-tap motion. However, there are three main interfaces that do react to double-tapping differently than if you were to only tap the screen once. The first of these functions can be used when you are using your iPhone to watch videos.

One place where a double tap can come in handy is when you are watching a movie or video clip on your iPhone. You will have noticed that the default view is a widescreen letterbox format with blank areas above and below the movie. While this is designed to give you the full widescreen view some people find the blank areas annoying and would prefer a full screen view instead.

This is where the double-tapping feature comes in handy. When you are watching a movie, simply double tap the screen, and you will eliminate the letterbox view, and will then be able to enjoy a full screen version. However, there are some downfalls to using this feature. If the movie you are watching has any type of subtitles, than you will quickly find that watching it in full screen mode may cut-off the words.

To get back to the original letterbox view then all you need to do is repeat the double tap and it will switch back. This makes it so easy to switch between the views and find the one that you prefer for the movie you are watching. This is a great feature of the iPhone and it is also one that you don't hear mentioned a lot. Once you start using it though you will wonder how you coped without knowing it before.

The double tap also comes in handy in other places too. If you're running the Google Maps application and would like to zoom in on a particular area then a double tap will do that for you. Double tapping also gives you a zoom function in the Photos application as well as the Safari web browser. There are quite a few other places that a double tap does something extra so it is definitely worth spending a little time going through the various applications on your iPhone and learning all the secrets of the double tap.
