How Parents Can Help Keep Kids From Taking Drugs

I believe that being a good parent is the toughest job in the world. There is basically no training. So parents use the trial and error method to bring up their children which is the worst way to learn.

I have worked in the world of drug prevention and awareness. Since 1979, after teaching for 20 years, I entered my second career. I became a professional speaker in the fields of motivation, drug prevention and awareness. During that time I conducted over 3000 programs on drug prevention and motivation in the schools.

Talking about effect of drugs is a lot harder than it used to be. The influence you have as a parent is important to your child's life. It takes constant involvement with your kids.

We live in a different world than when we grew up. We didn't know that much about drugs. Today's kids know more than their parents about drugs and over the counter medicines.

Parents who talk to their kids about drugs at home are more likely to have less problems with drugs than problems with their peers. Talking to your kids about drugs can help them remain drug free. That's why I included this short article on drugs.

Anytime you can steer your kids into talking about drugs is time well spent. It should be an on-going process!

Getting started with these talks is very important:

If you and your child see a group of kids drinking or smoking, use the moment to talk about the negative effects of alcohol and tobacco.

Be positive with your kids. Show them that you care. You can do this in many ways such as going to a play or musical they're their in or go to their soccer games. It never hurts to say I love you.

This is not the time to criticize - you can find a better way.

Asking questions of the things your kids like to do will give you an idea of what they have learned or haven't learned...

Teach the principles of "why," not just "what" to do or not to do.

Listen to them a lot. Avoid interrupting. Give them your undivided attention.

How to be a great parent:

Parents sometimes think peer pressure is the most important thing to resisting alcohol and drugs. But actually the behavior of the parents is more important.

This is very important. The behavior of the parents is what really counts when teaching your kids to resist the use of alcohol and other drugs.

It is very important also that the parents are good role models. It really starts when the mother and father decide to raise a family. It has been proven that alcohol and other drugs damage the unborn child.

Your kids will copy what the parents do. If dad comes home from work and always goes to the refrigerator and takes out a couple bottles of beer and drinks it in front of the kids. What is dad advertising to his kids?

The attitudes that you have right now are a result of what has gone into your mind all of your life, the upbringing you've had, the love you've had from your parents or guardians. We have been programmed either positively or negatively. Attitudes are nothing more than habits of thoughts. If we want to change them, we can!

We have been programmed either positively or negatively all of our lives. The attitudes we now have are nothing more than habits of thought. Much of this advertising is done by you parents.

William James, a Harvard psychologist said that you can change your life by changing your attitudes of mind.

Catch your kids doing something good and compliment them and do it right away.
