Getting Help To Eliminate Credit Card Debt
If you are currently in debt or have experienced debt in the past then you understand how potentially stressful it can be. Not only does it influence how you live your life but it can also be invasive, as creditors ring you up asking for outstanding debt.
And this feeling is affects more people than ever before, mainly of credit card debt. Credit cards are easy to get and there are more and more incentives to use them. Not only are they undeniably convenient but you can get bonuses or frequent flier points or some other deal to use a card. Not that this excuses people from over using them but it may go some way to understanding why people get into serious debt problems with credit cards.
There is no doubt that the use of credit cards has skyrocketed over the past 30 years. They have become more widely accepted and easier to get. It seems that nearly everyone has a credit card now however three decades ago it was the privilege of the more well to do. With this boom has also been the boom in debt as people become careless with their spending or see credit, or rather living on credit, as a way of life. This idea is very much a departure from previous generations that had the attitude that you needed to be able to afford something before you bought it. This is the key to getting yourself out of any kind of debt, including credit card debt.
Getting out of debt requires getting organized - understanding where your money comes from and where it is going. The best way to do this is to set up a budget. Work out what you must have each monthly and what is nice to have but not really necessary. Must haves are things like food and accommodation (rent, mortgage). It may include the cost of getting to and from work each day. Nice but not necessary things are really your shopping binges or eating out every night. It could be other things like dvd rentals. You don't need these things even though they make your life more pleasant.
If your monthly wage can cover these non essential items then by all means do them. But the budget should first make sure that you can pay for the essential items and any outstanding credit card debts.
Debt consolidation is a way to simplify your debts. It effectively combines all your debts into one large amount that is payable once a month. This can make managing your financial affairs less complicated and can suit many people. It doesn't rid you of debt but rather helps you to focus on paying back the debt. There are also start up incentives with some debt consolidation loans or credit cards that can save you a bit of money.
Also, if the lure of credit cards is still too great then use debit cards. They are the same as credit cards, in terms of convenience, but they are linked to your bank account. So any purchases that you make will be checked against your available balance. If the funds are not in the account the card will be rejected. This puts some external limit on your credit cards purchases that might help you to control your spending.
Another measure to tackle credit card debt is to seek professional help. There are many free or fee based debt counseling services around. They will help you implement much of the ideas listed above. They may even suggest getting a one off loan to square off your debts, that is negotiated at a lower rate. They will help you set up a budget that services the debts you have. They will help you stick to this budget through encouragement and motivation.
