Wooden And Metal Garden Sheds

A metal shed is built upon a metal frame, sheets of metal are attached to this frame which joins them all together and forms a very solid and durable shed. The types of metal can vary but usually they will be aluminum, galvanized steel or corrugated iron. Metal sheds will tend to stand more wear and tear than a wooden shed which is a great advantage as well as being protected against fire and rotting. Remember though that metal can always go rusty so try to look for galvanized steel to prevent this problem.

Also remember that if a shed is made from thin sheets of metal, then this can sometimes be dented quite easily. This could be more of a problem for you if vandalism is a problem in your local area especially if you keep very valuable equipment inside. If you use your shed for business it could be more of a target and you should make sure you are insured against potential loses. Bear in mind as well that metal can be damaged by long term ice and snow, so where possible you should clear this as soon as you can.

When thinking of laying a foundation for the metal shed, you should make it a concrete base and secure the shed using strong bolts. You should take more care when securing a metal shed because they have the potential to do a lot of damage due to their weight and size.

The natural look of wooden garden sheds can often be the main reason why people choose them as opposed to a plastic or metal one. They can be customized and blended into the natural garden surroundings so that they blend in and do not look out of place.

You should also make an effort to use varnishes or wood treatments because over time wood can start to go rotten or split. Therefore using a good treatment product can prevent this from happening. Using measures such as this can also help to prevent long term damage such as signs of mold which can make the shed look very old and defeat the object of it blending in with the garden.

Wooden sheds also tend to need more regular maintenance to avoid long term problems like those listed above. However it is worth taking a little time to carry out this work as you will see the long term benefits.

There are a number of wood stains, varnishes and preservatives which you can use to minimize the effects of rain, snow, ultra violet light, wood mites, and weather conditions. These come in a wide range of colours and varieties so that you can customize the look of your shed, this ensures that you don't lose the character of the shed and it will still blend in well with your garden.

It is worth knowing that there are certain types of wood which are naturally resistant to rain damage. An example of this is cedar which is ideal for this. You may find that you pay a little more for sheds that have been made out of this material but hopefully you will benefit from less rain-related maintenance problems.
