Dispelling Diabetes Myths

The world today has been really advanced. There are many technologies and information available. However, despite the advancement and high technology, there are still many traditional beliefs about diabetes. These beliefs vary from plain and simple to really intolerable blunders.

Diabetes is a Transmittable Disease: Unlike certain illnesses that may be transmitted from spread of infection, diabetes is acquired and may develop from the person's inability to generate insulin.

Insulin Shot is a Must: Insulin shot is the primary treatment given only to Type 1 Diabetic patients. It is only the second resort for Type 2 Diabetic Patients and is given only when other treatment options for this type of diabetes failed.

Diabetes Only Affects the Blood: Diabetes can affect the entire body if not treated. Risks and complications from not controlling blood sugar levels include stroke, heart disease, nerve damage, amputations resulting from nerve damage or impaired blood flow, blurred vision, blindness, and kidney failure or disease which must be treated with dialysis.

Eating too much sweet foods may contribute to the development of diabetes: Sweet foods do not cause diabetes; it may only aggravate the condition most especially to those who have been diagnosed with one.

Insulin causes High Blood Pressure and Atherosclerosis: There were medical evidences that worsen certain diseases such as high blood pressure and atherosclerosis but the assumptions that insulin causes these diseases to develop is wrong.

It is Alright to Eat as Many Fruits as You Can: Healthy nutrients and minerals are present in fruits however; there are also some contents such as carbohydrates which should be taken moderately.

Pasta, Potatoes and Bread; big no for diabetics: Carbohydrate-rich foods such as pasta, potatoes and breads are not good for patients suffering from diabetes. In the contrary to this, these types of foods contain some special types of carbohydrates that are needed by diabetic patients. However, not because

Chocolates are not allowed for Diabetics: Talking about taking things moderately, chocolates are okay as long as eaten moderately with the combination of mobility and exercise.

Diabetics Must Only Eat Special Diabetic Food: A healthy diet consists of low-fat, low-sugar, low-sodium foods, all of which are appropriate for the diabetic. There are not any extra bonuses for a diabetic to eat high-priced diabetic foods. A normal healthy diet, along with exercise, works very well.

Insulin Can Make a Person Gain Weight: While it is true that insulin adds weight to a person, it may be reversed as long as healthy diet is followed.

Adults are the only ones affected by Diabetes: Any person with a sedentary lifestyle may be prone to Type 2 Diabetes. These are the people with less mobility. Even children who do not move their body often may have Type 2 Diabetes. Nowadays, there are many things such as video games and computers and these things decrease the time spent for moving and exercises. Moreover, the availability of unhealthy foods in the market is rapidly increasing. Because parents are too busy to prepare healthy foods, children tend to eat junk foods and unhealthy foods such as those offered in the fast foods and other restaurants. Thus, Type 2 Diabetes may develop even in children.

Other Diseases are more likely to develop on Diabetic Patients: Diabetic patients are required to get anti-infection shots because infections may cause high blood sugar level and this condition is not good for diabetic patients.

The list of myths goes on and on, but you can plainly see that there are a wide variety of them. Some are silly while others are quite serious. Only by educating ourselves can these myths be put to rest once and for all.
