Home Teeth Whitening Gel: Save Money And Experience Brighter Teet

Bright white smiles are coveted by a large majority of people, including actors, models, politicians, and businessmen. Many people believe that having a nice smile is crucial to making new friends, getting a good job, and even making the first date with that important person a success. For this reason, the cosmetic dental industry has had great financial success.

Most people, however, are unwilling to pay a cosmetic dentist thousands of dollars to have their teeth whitened. This is particularly so because of the wide variety of home teeth whitening kits available to be used in the privacy of one's own washroom. The prices of these kits range from $20 to $300. This can be costly, especially for persons on a tight budget. Several products commonly found in the home can help to make a person's teeth several shades whiter.

Whitening gels can be made at home by using simple household chemicals. The first of these, hydrogen peroxide, can be purchased at the local pharmacy in the widely available three percent solution. This is the same chemical that is most often used in commercial teeth whitening kits; however, the gel in these kits contain at least 22 percent peroxide, so the peroxide you can purchase locally may not offer results as rapidly as the commercial kits. Peroxide also breaks down surface stains and kills bacteria in the mouth.

Sodium bicarbonate, more commonly known as baking soda, can also be used to create a teeth whitening compound. This chemical also helps to kill germs and remove surface stains from the teeth. It also neutralizes acids found in the mouth.

Glycerin is another common household item. This can be purchased in groceries, pharmacies, and health food shops. Glycerin, or vegetable oil, prevents the movement of bacteria. Since bacteria must be mobile to live, this oil hastens their death. Another product that accomplishes the same antibacterial action is Neutrogena soap.

To create a home whitening gel using these ingredients, add a few drops of glycerin to a small amount of baking soda (about one teaspoon). Continue to add glycerin until the paste is thoroughly moistened without becoming runny. Add about two tablespoonfuls of hydrogen peroxide to a glass of drinking water.

Rinse a toothbrush with peroxide and rub it gently over a cake of unscented Neutrogena soap. Cover the bristles with baking soda paste. Brush your teeth completely, and rinse it during brushing with peroxide. After brushing, rinse and gargle with the water-peroxide mixture.

Brushing the teeth twice daily like this will decrease a person's likelihood of developing gum disease or other bacteria-related oral problems. This also lightens the teeth by several shades over time. Although it may work less slowly than commercial kits or cosmetic dental treatments, it costs much less and is at least as beneficial to one's teeth and gums over a lifetime.
