Only a five minute period is required for application. The manufacturers warn, however, that persons with gum disease or orthodontics should not use this product.

Some may cause mouth sensitivity for certain individuals, and so should be avoided. The consensus seems to be that the best approach is to try a few gels, find the one that works for you, and avoid any that appear to cause mouth or gum sensitivity.
