Finally people are kept away from the surface of the painting by the glass.
The picture frame can be used to do more than hold and protect the picture. It can enhance the picture that it contains. Picture frames can be made to be beautiful works of art on their own and can visually better the look of the picture. Artists interested in creating through woodcarving can carve into wooden frames making lovely designs. Metal frames can be modified by metal workers, who mold the metal into desirable shapes throughout the surface of the frame.
With the invention of the camera not all picture frames hold artistic works of art. Family portraits, baby pictures, and baseball team photographs are placed in picture frames everyday. Basic wood and metal frames are used in the average household because most families can not afford to purchase an extravagant hand made picture frame.
With advancements in modern technology this has all changed. Electronic picture frames allow lights to be installed into the borders of your pictures. Your Christmas pictures can be surrounded by red and green light bulbs adding that extra feeling to your photography.
The most modern advancement in picture frame technology is the digital picture frame. By using digital frames a person is not required to physically have the picture within the frame. A person can take a digital picture with their house hold camera and display it on the digital picture frames. These frames can even display more than one picture. The frame can be set to slide show the pictures and show several pictures one after the other.
It would take dozens of normal picture frames to display the amount that a single digital frame can. MP3 audio files can be stored inside the digital frames allowing a person to hear music while the see look at the picture. Some people might say these factors would make the digital frames superior to traditional ones, while others argue it is not comparable because you do not actually get to look at the picture, just its image on a screen. These things are for the consumer to decide, they can say which will meet their needs and their visual preferences.
