When getting divorced the biggest cost is going to involve your attorney. Once you have hired an attorney then you need to keep in contact and ensure that they are progressing with your case. Many women make the unfortunate mistake of assuming that the Attorney will just get on with the process and that they shouldn't interfere.

To keep abreast of the current state of your case regularly ask your Attorney questions. Not only will you get answers but it will keep your case to the forefront of your attorneys mind. This helps to ensure that you don't get overlooked or relegated in his list of priorities. Below you'll find some other tips that will help to keep your Attorney working efficiently for you.

Don't be afraid of checking up on your attorney. Ask him if he has filed all the right motions with the court. Don't be afraid to then ask the court to confirm that they have received them. Do some research yourself and make sure you know what your attorney should be filing. There is nothing better for keeping an attorney on his toes than a knowledgeable client.

Attorneys very often charge by the minute and have a minimum charge. If you need to ask a simple question such as when are the court dates or if a certain item of paperwork has been received then ask an assistant or a secretary. They more than likely won't charge and if they do it will be at a considerably lower rate. Also try to avoid small talk during meetings, talking about the attorneys recent vacation is costing you money.

You must try to keep any contact with your former partner's to an absolute minimum. Make sure your attorney knows that you expect him to establish communications through your former partners attorney. Should however your attorney advise you differently then you should try to comply to the best of your ability. Log every meeting and phone call with your attorney. make a note of who you spoke to how long the call or meeting was and what was discussed and any requests you made. Don't contact your attorney if you only have one question. Save up the questions until you can ask 3 or 4. This will help to reduce costs. If possible email them through before your meeting so that they attorney can give you precise responses without spending time looking up the information when you are present.
