The goal of Google is to provide their users with the fastest, most relevant search results possible. They certainly are one of the only websites that I can think of that has the primary goal of getting visitors OFF their site as quickly as possible!
If you learn effective ranking methods - take time to learn what Google wants - and de-program yourself of all the inaccuracies regarding better search engine rankings, you will do fine. Improved search engine ranking will be easy for you to obtain.
