Savor American History This 4th of July at a Bed and Breakfast

Summer is already upon us, and the Fourth of July is just around the corner. Why not skip the backyard barbecue and really jump into the spirit of the holiday. These historic bed and breakfasts provide not only a glimpse into our nation's past, but also ideal locations from which to enjoy some of the best fireworks shows and Independence Day events in the country. With all the romance of a bed and breakfast, you might even make some fireworks of your own.

Massachusetts Bed and Breakfast Provide Glimpse of Nation's Beginnings

As the history books proclaim, Concord was the location of "the shot heard round the world." This picturesque Massachusetts village was front and center at the beginning of the Revolutionary War. In addition to this historic importance, Concord also was home to some of the nation's most famous writers, from Louisa May Alcott to Nathaniel Hawthorne. The town's Fourth of July festivities include a parade, music and fireworks at Emerson Field.

The village of Concord offers several historic bed and breakfasts. The Colonel Roger Brown House, built just a year before the War for Independence, is a Colonial-style home with rooms decorated with a mix of antiques and contemporary furnishings. Each of the five suites includes a kitchenette, as well. The Hawthorne Inn dates to 1870, but the land's previous owners include the likes of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Lousia May Alcott. The guest rooms are filled with a beautiful collection of antiques, including canopy beds in several bedchambers.

No doubt you've watched on TV as the Boston Pops hold their annual Fourth of July concert against a backdrop of one of the country's best fireworks shows. But you don't have to watch the show from your living room, head into Boston and see it live. With its bounty of historic sites, you'll receive an education in American history in just a few days.

The Clarendon Square Inn, located in a historic, six-story townhouse, is close to many Boston attractions. Guest rooms are decorated with a modern flair that complements the inn's historic ambiance. The College Club, another historic choice, includes eleven guest rooms, each decorated with antiques. The College Club is also home to the nation's oldest women's college club, and is host to many interesting events throughout the year. The inn is a short walk from the Charles River, a perfect viewing spot for Fourth of July fireworks.

Visit the site of the first Continental Congress or snap a picture of the Liberty Bell. These are just of the historic attractions you'll enjoy in Philadelphia. The city celebrates all day on July 4. The Party on the Parkway Festival, located along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, offers plenty of family-friendly fun, including a parade in the early evening. As night approaches, enjoy a Liberty Concert and Fireworks Event.

At the Thomas Bond House, you'll enjoy close access to all the fun and the historic charm of a home built in 1769. The Pennsylvania Bed and Breakfast is located in Independence National Historic Park. The period decor includes four-poster beds and reproductions, all done in Federal style. The home is within walking distance of Independence Hall and close to restaurants, museums, shopping and live theater.

For the total Fourth of July experience, why not spend the holiday in the nation's Capital? Washington, D.C.'s bounty of historic sites is seemingly endless. Independence Day celebrations begin with a parade along Constitution Avenue and ends with a breathtaking fireworks display above the Washington Monument.

The Swann House is a perfect spot from which to enjoy it all. The historic bed and breakfast is located in DuPont Circle and boasts spectacular architecture and details throughout. The enchanting exterior features a turret and second-story balcony and inside you'll find original features such as a carved marble fireplace and crown molding. Celebrate Independence at a Texas Bed and Breakfast

Whether you choose opt for the opulence of Millionaire's Row in Pasadena or the charm of a Victorian park in San Diego, Southern California bed and breakfasts are perfect for a Fourth of July getaway. The day includes a special concert, such as a showcase of the nation's best drum and bugle corps, as well as a huge fireworks show.
