Exercise - Can It Really Supercharge Your Weight Loss Program?

Today, you can't open a newspaper or magazine without finding some reference to the benefits of exercise for weight loss. It seems that in order to lose weight, dieting is not enough. Many health professionals maintain that to lose weight, and to keep it off, exercise is the real solution.

So just what does exercise supposedly do for weight loss? Well, for starters it is said to increase our metabolic rate for anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours. By doing this, we burn off more calories to help promote speedier weight loss.

**A calorie is a way of measuring the amount of energy produced by a certain food. If you use (burn up) exactly the same amount of calories that you take in, your weight will remain stable. If however you start to eat more calories than your body needs to operate it, you will gain weight. It is adviseable then to either cut calories or increase your daily exercise or preferably use a combination of both methods if you would like to lose weight.

The toning effects of exercise when you are losing weight, can be really quite astounding. Although you may not immediately start shedding pounds ( in fact you might even gain a couple of pounds as muscle is heavier than fat) it is quite possible that your clothes will start to fit better and may even become loose as you continue to follow your program.

Overweight people sometimes have other health challenges that have to be taken into account before they start exercising. Individuals suffering from various joint problems or injuries, may find it necessary to start slowly. Regardless of your state of health, it is still smart to talk to your doctor before you embark on any exercise program.

A good aerobic exercise plan should definitely be a part of anyone's weight loss program. Different results can be expected from different exercises, but they are all beneficial in one way or another for anyone trying to lose a few pounds (or more). Try to remember though, that you shouldn't be disappointed if you don't see amazing changes right off the bat - it does takes time to make these changes.

As an aerobic exercise, walking is perhaps the most easily accomodated by people in all stages of fitness. Like any other exercise, walking requires that you start out slowly and then over a period of time increase both the speed and length of your walk. Letting your body cool down by walking slowly at the end of your workout is important too and an integral part of any good walking program.

Another joint friendly exercise that a lot of overweight people can participate in is swimming. Where weight loss is concerned though, it has been shown not to be very successful.

If you would like to interject a more vigorous element to your weight loss program try dancing. Dancing in all its' forms is good for the body, but make sure your choice involves lots of movement across the floor, and obviously the more time you spend at it the better. Considered by many to be the optimum exercise to help you lose excess pounds, weight training/resistance training should play a huge role in your fitness program. You will notice your body starting to look toned and shapely fairly quickly. As an extra plus, you will become stronger, build more muscle, and so burn more calories helping you to lose weight faster.

It's undeniable, all forms of exercises are beneficial for our bodies, however the type we choose, and the intensity and duration all play a role in the results we will see from our efforts. For weight loss, exercise alone is not the be all and the end all. However, if you combine it with good healthy eating habits it's Superstar status will shine brightly.
